Abstract:

The report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China points out: “As socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, the principal contradiction facing Chinese society has evolved. What we now face is the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life.” This new summarization of major significance objectively reflects time change and important reality in China’s social development.

The new summarization of the principal contradiction facing society sticks to socialism’s fundamental task of developing the productive forces. The essence of socialism is to unlock and develop the productive forces, eliminate exploitation and polarization and ultimately realize common prosperity. The contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life with the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life as the basic yardstick more specifically and comprehensively highlights the importance of development, enriches the specific connotations of development and thus, on the basis of sticking to development in the past, highlights the issue of what kind of development we should stick to. The new summarization of the principal contradiction facing society further makes it clear that we should, on the basis of sticking to continuous promotion of development, focus efforts on solving the problem of unbalanced and inadequate development, striving to improve the quality and effect of development, striving to promote balanced and adequate development on the basis of previous development and better realizing well-rounded human development and all-round social progress. Of course, We must recognize that the evolution of the principal contradiction facing Chinese society does not change our assessment of the present stage of socialism in China. The basic dimension of the Chinese context—that our country is still and will long remain in the primary stage of socialism—has not changed. China’s international status as the world’s largest developing country has not changed.

The new summarization of the principal contradiction facing society sticks to socialism’s fundamental principle of common prosperity, which is not only a goal of socialism, but also a fundamental principle of socialism. The contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life, with elimination of polarization and realization of common prosperity as the basic yardstick and with the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects as the basic requirements, highlights the problem of unbalanced development. In the face of the reality of regional differences, urban-rural differences and rich-poor differences in China’s social development, the new summarization of the principal contradiction facing society further makes it clear that the problem of unbalanced development should be eliminated and sticks to socialism’s fundamental principle of common prosperity.

The new summarization of the principal contradiction facing society consolidates full confidence in development of international socialism. The principal contradiction facing society has evolved from the contradiction between the ever-growing material and cultural needs of the people and the backwardness of social production to the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life, which reflects the successful practice of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and the unique superiority of the path, theory, system and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics in terms of developing social production and meeting the material and cultural needs of the people and thus proves the strong vitality of scientific socialism, enhancing confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
