Meeting of the BRICS Trade Ministers Held in Shanghai

The 2017 Meeting of the BRICS Trade Ministers held in Shanghai on August 1. Chairman of the meeting and Chinese Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the meeting would focus on the topics of facilitating investment, promoting trade development, strengthening economic and technological cooperation and capacity building, and supporting the multilateral trade system. Russian Minister of Economic Development Oreshkin, Indian Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Sitharaman, South African Minister of Trade and Industry Davies and Brazilian Secretary of Commerce and Services of Ministry of Industry Maia attended the meeting. 

Since BRICS cooperation began in 2006, “BRICS” has gradually changed from an idea of investment in research reports to a model of mutually beneficial cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries and an important force promoting the world’s economic growth and improving global governance. At present, the economic aggregate of BRICS accounts for nearly one fourth of the world, contributing to nearly one half of the world’s economic growth with increasingly important status and roles. 

Zhong Shan said, China as the host of this year’s Meeting of the BRICS Trade Ministers had determination and confidence to actively implement leaders’ consensus with wisdom, courage and practical action and jointly push BRICS economic and trade cooperation to a new level. 

It is reported that the BRICS trade ministers will discuss the topics of facilitating investment, promoting trade development, strengthening economic and technological cooperation and capacity building, and supporting the multilateral trade system. Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Director General of UNIDO, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, representatives of the BRICS Business Council, etc. attended the meeting.
