National Bureau of Statistics: The Economy Maintained a Steady Performance with Good Momentum for Growth in April

  The press spokesman of the National Bureau of Statistics, introduced at the press conference held by the State Council Information Office on May 15 that the production sector grew steadily and market demand continued to expand in April. The national economy sustained an overall steady performance with good momentum for growth.

  In April, the total value added of the industrial enterprises above designated size grew by 6.5% in real terms year-on-year, 1.1% lower than that of last month, or 0.5% higher than that in April last year. The index of services production increased by 8.1% year-on-year, 0.2% lower than that of last month, maintaining the high level of over 8% since this year.

  In the meanwhile, the investment and consumption stayed steady. According to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on the very day, in the first four months this year, the national investment in fixed assets grew by 8.9% year-on-year, 0.3% lower than that of the first three months, among which, private investment grew by 6.9% year-on-year, accounting for 61% of the total investment.

  Regarding the real estate, in the first four months, the investment in real estate development across the country grew by 9.3% year-on-year, 0.2% higher than that of the first three months. The floor space of commercial buildings sold nationwide reached 416.55 million square meters, up by 15.7% year-on-year. At the end of April, the floor space of commercial buildings for sale nationwide was 674.69 million square meters, 13.41 million square meters less than that at the end of March.

  Regarding the consumption, according to statistics, in April, the total retail sales of consumer goods grew by 10.7% year-on-year, 0.2% lower than that of last month and 0.6% higher than that in the same month of last year.

  Xing Zhihong said that “As a whole, the national economy in April maintained steady performance and good growth momentum with positive factors accumulating. However, we should be aware that domestic and international conditions remain complex and volatile, structural contradictions have not been addressed fully and some emerging issues need to be followed closely.”
